Journalism blogs

October 8, 2006

I have to admit that I don’t follow many journalism blogs as opposed to checking out web news sites (NPR, BBC, NY Times). However there is one that I recently came across when I first started covering my beat and there are some that I found and thought were interesting.

Atlantic Yards Report. This is by a journalist, Norman Oder, who has been keeping up with the media coverage of the Atlantic Yards issue, including the New York Times.’ For the beat that I am covering, this is such a wealth of information. He really analyzes between fact and fiction when it comes to reports and media coverage.

When Brian Williams took over the NBC anchor desk, I heard that he regularly blogs. Finally I checked it out in a site called The Daily Nightly and was impressed that he does write a blog along with other NBC correspondents and producers (I’m gonna check out the two other networks). That tells me he is an anchorman who knows the segment of his audience as being computer literate and followers of current events trends (ironic in that most watchers of the evening network news are probably much older than I am (32)). The posts offer reflections about what’s been happening in the news and what’s coming up in the broadcasts.
The BBC News Site has a blog called The Editors in which they share their perspectives and dilemmas in their coverage of the news. Some of the topics may seem foreign to us Yanks about British people and news were are not familiar about but the recent entries about covering Muslims and the recent Amish tragedy reveal the decisions they made at the time and looking back in hindsight. (Particularly check out Tim Levell’s blog post Covering Distressing News for Children, which could be journalistic primer) Very good.

As someone who is a big NPR junkie and who occasionally follows their web site when I miss a segment on the radio, it has its own blog called Mixed Signals, and it’s a hodgepodge of interesting topics ranging from music to films to biggest news of the week.

I also have to give special mention to my classmates’ blogs. They are so dedicated and passionate in their opinions that they make my entries sound vanilla at times (How in the world do they find time to do it?). They bring awareness to topics I’ve never come across or heard about it, and some can be thoughtful and provocative too. So kudos to them.
